Start coming in on time. Don: Maybe I'm late because I was at home with my family, reading the Bible. 3) Peggy to Pete: Stop barging in here and infecting me with your anxiety. 4) Bert Cooper, about Conrad Hilton: He's a bit of an eccentric, isn't he? 5) Carlton, to Don: Why can't you stare into the eclipse? What's it gonna do, really? I stare at the sun every day. Don: You stare at the sun every day? Carlton: Well, you know. I look at it. 6) Miss Farrell, to Don: So you're different, huh? Don: Is that impossible? Miss Farrell: You're all wearing the same shirt. 7) Duck, to Peggy, about why their meetings are at the Pierre: Have you been to Grey? Things We Should Have Said
- Confessions of an Ad Man by David Ogilvy is mentioned again in this episode, and we talk about how it wasn't published yet, but they explain that by saying Roger has an advance copy. We should have mentioned that earlier Ho Ho also referred to this book - he said he had seen galleys of it.
- We talked about Betty's openness to Henry as being something new for her - we didn't contrast that with her rejection of Arthur (from the stables) in Season 2
- We didn't say Henry and Betty pause outside a furniture store after the bakery and see the fainting couch she ends up purchasing when we talked about that scene
- When Betty gets home from her lunch date with Henry (which Don didn't know about), and then Roger calls Betty at home about Don's contract, she says it's disrespectful of him to go behind Don's back. "I was not respectful to you" is the phrase Don uses when he acknowledges his infidelity to Betty in Season 2. It's hard to blame Betty for a lunch, given Don's excessive cheating, but Roger's not the only one going behind Don's back here.
- We should have called out Don's conversation with Suzanne Farrell as another type of negotiation he effectively loses - he is flirting, it isn't just innocent chitchat he's making - so even though he gets edgy to assert power, he's not the one with agency in that discussion, either
- We referenced the ad consultant commentary that Peggy would benefit from leaving Sterling Cooper, where she has the "baggage" of being known as a secretary. Don explicitly threw that past role in her face when she asked for more opportunity with Hilton, illustrating the point.
- We asked why Don blamed Roger about the contract more than Bert, Lane, or Hilton. The whole episode Don has bullied people he perceives he has power over, so in that cohort, Roger is probably the least powerful person Don can blame for it.
