Podcast Show Notes: Mad Men Season 1, Episode 7: Red in the Face
Red in the Face is an outstanding episode, and we're not just saying that because it includes a Chip and Dip, although it does! Roger forces his way into a last-minute dinner at Don and Betty's house and proceeds to hit on Betty. Don seeks revenge through a lavish lunch, while Pete tries to exchange a wedding gift and defend his masculinity.

Sterling Script Lines - S1: Episode 7

1) Roger, to Bert: All I can get from this story is that Hitler didn't smoke. And I do.

2) Roger, to Pete: Don and I talk all the time when you're not around. In fact, we're going to do it right now . . . Good night, Paul.

3) Roger, to Don: At a certain age, they lose that. That glow of pure youth. It's like they hit thirty and somebody puts out a light.

4) Betty (eating a salad because Roger forced himself over for dinner and he's eating her steak): I'm a vegetarian sometimes.

5) Roger, to Don: I always thought by the way you drop your g's sometimes you were raised on a farm. Someplace with a swimmin' hole.

6) Pete, to multiple people: It's a chip and dip. We got two.

7) Roger, to Don: At some point we've all parked in the wrong garage.

8) Pete, in the Nixon meeting: You know who else doesn't wear a hat? Elvis. That's what we're dealing with here.

9) Roger, to Don as they eat oysters: Look at you. I had no idea you were such a fan of the mollusk.

10) Roger, struggling to climb 23 flights of stairs: My name's on the building. They can wait for me. I've got to stop talking.

Things We Should Have Said

• We didn't talk about Betty confessing to being "pudgy as a girl," or how her relationship with her mother affected her thinking about her image and appearance. In the last episode when she looked at family photos, she already described her six-year-old as looking "fat."
  
• We missed a fun small moment at dinner when Roger sees a cake frosted with "Mommy and Daddy," and initially worries it's their anniversary, then notes: "Simple, colloquial: she writes like her father." 
  
• "Chip and Dip" is said five times in this episode. We feel strongly that "It was a gift" and "We got two" are t-shirts waiting to happen.
