On Your Smart Phone
Using apps like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts, and iHeart Radio
- Be sure the app is installed on your phone
- Pair your phone with the audio system in your car, with Bluetooth/hands free, or with a cord (USB or
3.5 mm cable - a standard headphone jack - depending on your phone and your car) - You may also set up earbuds or earphones if you prefer to listen from your phone while walking or running, for example
- When the speaker connection is working, open your podcast app of choice, search for a great podcast show - Mad Men: From Chip & Dip to Zou Bisou is a great choice! - and download or stream new episodes.
Note: downloading will take up memory on your phone, while streaming will use data from your smartphone plan. On an iPhone, you can go into Settings > Apps > (Apple) Podcasts, and turn off the option to use cellular data if you're worried about streaming charges. You'll need to download your episodes from home on your Wifi network before you go out, and then play your episodes in the car or on walks directly from the downloaded shows in your Podcasts library. You can delete episodes you've already listened to to save space on your phone. - Subscribe or Follow podcasts you like so that new episodes of those shows are visible in your podcast app
- When you really like a show, it's kind to give it 5 stars within a podcast app, since ratings help drive the success of the show, and/or leave a good review to help other listeners find it!
On Smart Speakers like Alexa or Google Home
Listen to your Bluetooth speaker (like Amazon's Echo Dot), and ask it to play the podcast you want to hear: "Alexa, play All Things Mad Men, from Chip and Dip to Zou Bisou (pronounced zoo bee zoo)," and listen in your home or office.

Even though podcasts are designed to be listened to and not watched, some podcast hosts are recorded while they talk, while others play the audio with a visual placeholder or the animations of speech sound waves as the hosts talk.
